Alan Shearer, the English football legend, affirmed that the controversial refereeing decisions in the Egypt vs Argentina match in the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup lacked consistency, criticizing the refereeing crew and video technology's handling of the two decisive moments in the match.

In contrast, the Egyptian national team players demanded a penalty kick before the third goal scored by Enzo Fernandez in the third minute of stoppage time, but the referee awarded a continuation of play without returning to VAR, which sparked a wide wave of controversy regarding the double standard in handling the two incidents.
