Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo now faces the threat of a financial penalty and a suspension that could last up to six months, following his dispute with coach Jorge Jesus and his departure from the national team camp.
Ronaldo left Portugal's training camp in Copenhagen on Wednesday evening, after Jesus' comments at the press conference, where he said: "I can promise whatever I want; I am the coach. I told Ronaldo that he would not start the match and would be on the bench. If I need him for 30 minutes, he will play; if I don't need him, he won't play. No player is going to change my mind."
What will happen to Ronaldo after leaving the national team camp?
According to the Portuguese Football Federation's disciplinary regulations, Cristiano faces a sanction that may include a suspension ranging from one month to six months, along with a fine.
The regulations state: "Any player who is officially called up and then leaves without justification, or fails to attend a training session, match, or any activity of the national teams, or any activity related to the sporting representation of the Portuguese Football Federation or Portugal, shall be punished with a suspension ranging from one month to six months. Additionally, if the player is a professional, a fine ranging from €500 to €1,000 shall be imposed."
Furthermore, Article 160(2) of the Portuguese Football Federation's regulations states as follows: "Absence or departure results in the automatic preventive suspension of the player, in accordance with the conditions stipulated in these regulations."
