The referees' technical committee in the Spanish league has settled its position on the application of the Vinicius law in the next season of the La Liga championship, 2026/27, according to the Spanish newspaper "AS".
The International Football Association Board had approved the Vinicius law by punishing any player who covers his mouth while speaking during altercations, in which case he receives a red card, and it has already been applied in the World Cup.
The Spanish newspaper "AS" reported that the referees' technical committee decided not to apply what is called the Vinicius law in the next La Liga season, but it requested the International Football Association Board to allow it to punish teams whose goalkeepers exaggerate injuries, as is the case in the English Premier League (to read the details from here).
It explained that the referees' technical committee was hesitant at the beginning of the month regarding the possibility of applying the Vinicius law in the Spanish league, but it ultimately agreed with UEFA's decision not to use it.
Concerns are growing about the possibility of misapplying the mentioned law, as there are players who cover their mouths but not for the purpose of insult.
Fran Soto, head of the referees' technical committee, said: "Given the possibility of leaving a team to play with ten players without conclusive evidence as to whether the player in question said that or not, we must see whether that measure or other measures are sufficient to combat that behavior."
