Portugal's scenarios for qualifying for the UEFA Nations League quarter-finals

Via Yallakora

Portugal enters its match against Norway in the fourth round of Group 4, League A, of the UEFA Nations League, sitting at the top of the standings after achieving a perfect record against Wales, Norway, and Denmark.

The Portuguese national team tops Group 4 of League A in the UEFA Nations League with 9 points from 3 matches.

Portugal's chances of securing a spot in the quarter-finals appear strong, especially since the teams finishing first and second in each group of League A qualify for the quarter-finals.

A win secures qualification

If Portugal succeeds in beating Norway, their point tally will rise to 12, which officially guarantees them a finish in either first or second place in the group stage.

This is because Portugal's closest rivals before the fourth round—Denmark, Norway, and Wales—have only 3 points each, meaning none of them can reach 12 points after this round.

Consequently, the Portuguese national team would become the first qualifiers from the group for the quarter-finals.

A draw is also enough for qualification

In the event that the Portugal vs. Norway match ends in a draw, Portugal's point tally will rise to 10.

In this scenario as well, Portugal would officially secure qualification for the quarter-finals, as the maximum number of points any of their rivals could reach after the fourth round would be 6, with only two rounds remaining.

Therefore, while the maximum possible score for any rival would be 12 points, Portugal would have already guaranteed at least one of the qualifying positions, regardless of the result of the Wales vs. Denmark match.

A loss delays the decision

The only scenario that does not confirm Portugal's qualification today is a loss against Norway.

In this case, Portugal's point tally would remain at 9, while Norway would increase theirs to 6; meanwhile, the winner of the Wales vs. Denmark match would get 6 points, or both teams would reach 4 points in the event of a draw.

Here, the door remains open for rivals to chase Portugal during the final two rounds.

After the fourth round, Portugal has two matches left: against Denmark on November 14, and against Wales on November 17.
