Al-Ittihad Club of Saudi Arabia announced the signing of Dutch midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum on a free transfer.

Al-Ittihad outbid England's Chelsea, which had targeted the player in recent days.

The veteran midfielder signed a one-season contract with the Tigers.

Wijnaldum, 35, left Al-Ettifaq at the end of last season and remained without a club until now.

Wijnaldum participated in 217 Premier League matches during his spells with Newcastle United and Liverpool from 2015 to 2021.

During his career, Wijnaldum won the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, and UEFA Super Cup with Liverpool.

Wijnaldum left Liverpool upon the expiration of his contract to join Paris Saint-Germain, before later moving on loan to AS Roma.

He joined Al-Ettifaq three years ago and departed at the end of last season in the Saudi Pro League.

The midfielder scored 17 goals in 34 matches for Al-Ettifaq last season.

Wijnaldum becomes the Tigers' seventh signing, following Jan Carlo Simic, Dion Lopy, Richard Ruiz, Mukhtar Ali, Rakan Kaabi, and Fares Abdi.

Al-Ittihad currently sits fourth in the Saudi Pro League standings with 11 points, four points behind leaders Al-Hilal.
