Mustafa Shobier, the goalkeeper of the Egyptian national team, stole the spotlight after successfully saving Argentina's penalty kick taken by Lionel Messi, recording a new record for the Pharaohs' goal guardian in the World Cup.

The Egyptian national team faces its Argentine counterpart in the round of 16 of the World Cup, with the match between the two teams taking place at Atlanta Stadium in the United States of America.

Shobier joins the World Cup legends

Mustafa Shobier, the goalkeeper of the Egyptian national team, succeeded in saving the Argentine penalty kick, which Lionel Messi was tasked with taking, in the 21st minute of the match.

Lionel Messi directed the ball to the left of Mustafa Shobier, while the Pharaohs' goalkeeper chose to dive in the same corner, deflecting the ball away from his goal and preserving Egypt's lead.

Mustafa Shobier has become the fourth goalkeeper in World Cup history to save two penalty kicks, excluding shootouts, in the same tournament, joining Tomaszewski, Friedel, and Szczesny.

Shobier saved two penalty kicks in the 2026 World Cup, immortalizing his name alongside World Cup goalkeeping legends Tomaszewski (1974), Friedel (2002), and Szczesny (2022).

After Shobier's save, Egypt has become the team against which the most penalty kicks have been awarded in World Cup history without the ball entering their net.
