Roland Mokwena, coach of Pyramids FC, believes his team needs to build and impose its own identity, much like Barcelona.
Mokwena stated in an interview with Al-Nahar TV: "For example, Barcelona has fans and a history, but beyond that, it also has an identity. Pyramids may not have the same history, but we know that many fans love winning teams. Therefore, we understand that if we achieve victories, we will attract supporters, as we have already seen in some matches where the stadium was filled."
He continued, "I am like a painter creating a canvas; this is Pyramids' style of play. It differs from Al-Ahly and Zamalek, which both possess rich histories. As for us, we aim to build our own identity, impose it, and send clear messages to the public that this is who we are."
Speaking about Al-Ahly and Zamalek, he said, "I have watched Zamalek frequently in the CAF Champions League. I know they have lost many players and changed coaches, but Zamalek will always remain Zamalek. It is a historic and extremely important club in the eyes of the Egyptian people."
He added, "Zamalek contributes significantly to the advancement of football in Egypt, despite the challenges it faces. There is a path to success and solutions to problems. It is a club I deeply respect."
Regarding Al-Ahly, he noted, "Al-Ahly is the team that boasts many outstanding players. Whenever anyone thinks about Egyptian football, Al-Ahly immediately comes to mind."
When asked about the competition for the league title, he replied, "There is strong competition in the league this year. I tried to watch as many matches as possible to get a general overview of the league before its start."
He continued, "When I faced Pyramids while at Mamelodi Sundowns, I watched five hours of analytical videos."
He further explained, "The beginning was challenging. One must study this league thoroughly, understand the capabilities and mentalities of the players, and observe everything that causes tension and pressure on them."
Responding to questions about his managerial style differing from Krunoslav Jurčić, Pyramids' former head coach, Mokwena said, "My approach to managing Pyramids differs from Jurčić's. There are many ways to motivate players; every coach has their own method."
Jurčić was known for his emotional reactions on the sidelines while directing players during matches.
Mokwena continued discussing his differences with Jurčić's management style: "The previous coach and I have different personalities and beliefs, but our goal remains the same. I do not wish to distract players with excessive instructions during matches."
He pointed out, "I strive hard to equip players with all the tools necessary for victory and provide them with numerous encouraging elements."
He concluded, "I motivate players to solve problems during matches; this is the technical aspect. Psychologically, there are internal motivations that players receive from external influences, whether from the head coach, fans, financial incentives, or the pursuit of glory. However, motivation must ultimately come from within. I know this is difficult, but I push players to reach their best performance."
Pyramids succeeded in winning their first three league matches, scoring six goals without conceding any, thus topping the league standings.
