Mahmoud Ashour: I will not rule in Egypt again.. and this is the date of my retirement

International referee Mahmoud Ashour spoke about his participation as a video assistant referee in the 2026 World Cup competitions scheduled to conclude tomorrow.

Ashour said via On Sport channel: "We delivered a good tournament and years of effort, and thank God that I am ending my career by participating in the World Cup, and I believe we have honored Egyptian and Arab refereeing".

He added: "We worked hard, did what was required of us, and received a good evaluation, and this is something that will not be forgotten and will be written in history".

He continued: "There was interaction with an elite group of the world's best referees, and we benefited greatly from participating in the World Cup".

He went on: "The Federation noted that there would be a honoring for us, and I met Hani Abu Rida before the Australia match, and he supported us greatly, and Egyptian football will all be in a big leap after the honorable performance in the World Cup".

He elaborated: "This is my last season in refereeing, and my last day internationally will be December 31, 2026, but I will not referee again in Egypt, and it is possible that I will be present in the Football Association or the African Confederation or in the media".

He continued regarding running in the Hunting Club elections: "The idea is on the table but I have not decided yet".

He concluded: "I prefer an Egyptian for the chairmanship of the Referees Committee by a million percent, and I believe Essam Abdel Fattah's name is strongly proposed and he will be present, and there are many names that can develop Egyptian refereeing such as Yasser Abdel Raouf and others".
