Belgian Vincent Kompany, Bayern Munich's coach, revealed that Jamal Musiala's sudden collapses twice on the pitch resulted from a slight change in his medication.
The 23-year-old player stated this week that he is undergoing treatment to recover from a "neurological disorder," after collapsing twice within four days during matches against Leipzig and Heidenheim.
According to the Daily Mail, this condition can cause temporary and brief seizures but is easily treatable; Bayern Munich had previously been informed of Musiala's condition before the World Cup.
Kompany clarifies details of Musiala's injury
Now, with his player's consent, Kompany disclosed that Musiala experienced side effects during both incidents, in media statements ahead of Bayern Munich's match against Borussia Dortmund in the German Super Cup this weekend.
He said: "The player made a slight adjustment to his treatment, which caused some side effects. It is entirely normal to make changes to a treatment plan. The initial shock for us occurred quite some time ago, so we are not discussing it much at the moment."
Kompany added: "We have received much more information since then, and we made decisions with the help of senior experts. Jamal has everyone's support."
Kompany confirmed that Musiala will continue training individually away from his team in preparation for launching their campaign to defend the Bundesliga title in the new 2026/2027 season.
Uli Hoeness, Bayern Munich's honorary president, clarified last Wednesday: "We have been aware of the problems for some time. Against Leipzig, it happened for the first time on the pitch, and it was clear to everyone."
He continued: "At that moment, we thought that if it didn't recur so quickly, the medication he was taking would be beneficial. However, when it repeated itself four days later in the same manner, I was completely shocked."
He noted: "I was speechless, which rarely happens to me. We expected anything except the return of these problems. It is a tragedy, especially for Jamal Musiala."
He added: "We have already taken some precautions. The treating neurologists provided us with written confirmation, as it was extremely necessary from their perspective that there be no concerns regarding Jamal's participation in high-performance sports."
Hoeness affirmed: "Otherwise, we would have acted negligently. Since receiving this written confirmation, we have been able to sleep more peacefully, but honestly, I am speechless and cannot find a real solution."
What did Musiala say about his injury?
For his part, Musiala posted a video on social media Tuesday evening, explaining that his health condition caused him absence seizures, a type of seizure that can lead to loss of consciousness, imbalance, or even impaired responsiveness.
Musiala clarified: "I know it may seem concerning at first glance, but for me, it is currently part of my daily life. I am receiving excellent medical care, and I remain very optimistic. Bayern Munich and those around me stand by my side, helping me overcome this ordeal."
He added: "More importantly, there is no additional health risk. After continuous consultation and communication with specialists, my personal desire was to face this challenge, and after obtaining medical approval from neurologists..."
Musiala concluded his statements saying: "I want to continue doing what helps me recover while living my life and pursuing my passion for football. I have taken full responsibility for this decision. Overall, I feel very positive and am on the right path."
