German club Bayern Munich announced on Wednesday the departure of Portuguese midfielder João Palhinha and his transfer to Benfica during the current summer transfer window.
Palhinha, 31, has returned to Portugal after completing his move to Benfica, coming back to Lisbon, the city where his professional career began with Sporting Lisbon.
Max Eberl, member of Bayern Munich's board of directors for sports affairs, said: "We discussed João Palhinha's situation with him openly and reached a solution that satisfies everyone. He has decided to continue his career in his home country. We thank him for his time at Bayern Munich and wish him all the best for the future."
Palhinha joined Bayern Munich from English club Fulham in the summer of 2024, playing 25 matches for the team across all competitions during his first season, contributing to winning the German league title.
The Portuguese player spent last season on loan at Tottenham Hotspur, before returning to Bayern Munich and then making a permanent move to Benfica.
Palhinha signed a contract with Benfica extending until 2030, in a deal worth a base fee of 14 million euros, potentially rising to around 19 million euros if agreed-upon incentives and bonuses are met.
