The Italian Football Federation announced on Wednesday that it is withdrawing its support for Gianni Infantino's candidacy for the presidency of FIFA in the elections scheduled for March 2027.
The Italian Federation clarified that this decision aims to clearly and transparently affirm its stance, aligning with the position of UEFA and its president, Aleksander Čeferin, regarding recent initiatives proposed by Infantino concerning football governance and the development of international competitions.
Giovanni Malagò, President of the Italian Football Federation, stated: "We will continue working hand in hand with UEFA and other European associations to promote a vision for football based on merit, solidarity, sustainability, and the central role of fans."
He added: "We believe in a model founded on dialogue, listening, and shared responsibility—a model that has enabled football to grow and innovate while simultaneously preserving its core principles."
Earlier this month, the Football Association of Wales became the first European association to announce the withdrawal of its support for Infantino's re-election as FIFA president, amid growing pressure due to his plan to establish a new company to manage commercial rights and ticket sales for the federation's tournaments, including the World Cup, with 21% of its shares to be sold to a private investment firm.
