English press reports revealed that opponents of FIFA President Gianni Infantino are considering escalating against his administration by boycotting FIFA tournaments and launching parallel international competitions, if he remains in his position and seeks to win a fourth term.
According to The Times newspaper, the intensity of disagreements has escalated after the controversy sparked by FIFA's proposed project, which aimed to sell stakes to private sector investors in the international federation's tournaments, which several federations considered an attempt to privatize international competitions, before Infantino retracted the project under widespread pressure.
Several parties, including UEFA and CONCACAF, announced their rejection of the project, while the English Football Association is preparing to withdraw its previous letter of support for Infantino, demanding a comprehensive review of FIFA's governance, and the Welsh Football Association announced its loss of confidence in the current leadership.
In another development, UEFA sent a legal letter to Infantino informing him of its consideration of legal action regarding the project, while requesting that a number of FIFA officials retain all documents related to it.
Reports indicate that Infantino's opponents aim to pressure FIFA ahead of the presidential elections scheduled for March 2027, by threatening the organization with the loss of its most prominent national teams and the resulting sporting and commercial losses.
