Gianni Infantino, President of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA), has confirmed that he will run for re-election to the same position next year, despite facing significant recent pressure to step down.
A FIFA spokesperson told Sky Sports: "Last April, Gianni Infantino announced his intention to seek re-election as FIFA President in 2027; nothing has changed. Infantino will run for re-election."
This marks the first time FIFA has confirmed that Infantino intends to seek a fourth term since the crisis erupted following this summer's World Cup.
This comes after more than one football association announced it was withdrawing its support for Gianni Infantino, President of FIFA, in his bid for a new term.
The European Football Association (UEFA) prefers a candidate from outside Europe to challenge Infantino for the FIFA presidency.
Aleksander Čeferin, President of UEFA, had previously stated that he does not intend to run against Gianni Infantino, President of FIFA, amid calls for Infantino's resignation.
The FIFA presidential election is scheduled for March 2027, amidst divisions over Infantino.
UEFA, the Asian Football Confederation, and CONCACAF issued an open letter accusing Infantino of breaking the trust of the football community and placing himself above the game.
The escalation followed attempts to sell commercial shares of the World Cup, a move the associations confirmed was carried out without sufficient consultation and in a rushed manner to avoid discussion.
Meanwhile, the Egyptian Football Association, under the leadership of Hany Abu Rida, issued a joint statement along with six other associations expressing support for Gianni Infantino, President of FIFA.
Infantino continues to enjoy support from the Confederation of African Football (CAF), CONMEBOL, and the Oceania Football Confederation, with the exception of New Zealand.
