Does the match stadium make the difference?

Do some Egyptian League stadiums grant home teams a greater advantage than expected? And has the distribution of competition matches among stadiums changed over the years?

To answer that, all Egyptian Premier League matches were analyzed over 9 seasons, from 2015/16 until 2023/24. The analysis focused on 16 stadiums, each of which hosted 50 matches or more, with a total of 2,516 matches.

The difference here is measured between the actual win percentage for home teams in each stadium and the expected win percentage according to the composition of the clubs that played their matches there. Therefore, the difference does not mean that the stadium directly caused the result, but it reveals the stadiums where home team results came higher or lower than the expected level.

Police Stadium in the lead

Police Stadium recorded the largest positive difference, as the home teams' results advantage in it reached +5.36 percentage points compared to the expected rate. It was followed by Cairo International Stadium (+3.44), then Suez Stadium (+3.26) and 30 June Stadium (+3.09).

In contrast, Borg El Arab Stadium showed the largest negative difference, at −3.94 percentage points, followed by Al-Maks Stadium (−2.40), then Al-Salam Stadium (−2.27) and Petrosport Stadium (−2.23).

Across the 16 stadiums under analysis, home teams achieved 928 wins out of 2,516 matches, with an actual win rate of 36.88%.

*"Al Ahly Stadium" is the name used in the database for "Al Salam Stadium", where Al Ahly obtained the right of usufruct for 25 years in 2019, but the contract was terminated in 2023.

Nearly half of the league matches on 3 stadiums

The change was not limited to home team results; the distribution of matches among the three most hosting stadiums in each season witnessed clear shifts.

In the 2015/16 season, the three most hosting stadiums hosted 132 matches out of 306, i.e. 43.14% of the league matches.

The percentage remained close to that in the following season, before rising to 49.02% in 2017/18.

Then it declined to 29.74% in 2019/20, which is the lowest level during the period, before gradually rising to reach 50.33% in 2023/24, after the three most hosting stadiums hosted 154 matches out of 306.

The figures reveal that the concentration of league matches in a limited number of stadiums has changed significantly over the years, while home team results varied from one stadium to another compared to the expected level.

However, the data alone does not allow proving that the stadium itself is the cause of the home teams' advantage; the difference is also affected by the composition of the clubs, the strength of the teams, the nature of the matches, and other factors related to each stadium.
