The South American Football Confederation "CONMEBOL" announced the implementation of the new amendments by the International Football Association "FIFA".
CONMEBOL revealed in a statement on its official website the application of the amendments to the laws of the game for the 2026-2027 season in the competitions organized by the South American Football Confederation, starting from next July.
The South American Confederation explained that the new decisions aim to speed up the game, reduce wasted time, promote sportsmanship, and improve referee management.
Meanwhile, CONMEBOL refused to implement the clause regarding the expulsion of players who cover their mouths while talking to the opponent.
FIFA approved a number of amendments that began to be applied in the World Cup, obligating players to leave the field within 10 seconds when making a substitution, as well as taking throw-ins and goal kicks within a maximum of 5 seconds, otherwise the throw-in goes to the opponent, or a corner kick is played.
The new amendments allowed referees to return to video technology to determine the identity of the warning recipient, review second warning cases that lead to a red card, and review corner kick cases.
Paraguayan player Miguel Almirón was the first player to receive a red card during the match against Turkey in the group stage of the World Cup, after covering his mouth while talking to his opponent.
Consequently, Almirón's expulsion will be the first and only one.
