European countries are discussing the issue of boycotting the World Cup, in a strong escalation step on their part, according to press reports revealed on Tuesday.
"Sky Sports" global network reported that European countries are discussing the issue of boycotting the World Cup if FIFA President Gianni Infantino insists on proceeding with his plans to sell part of the International Federation of Football Association to private sector investors.
Press reports appeared yesterday indicating that Infantino wants to launch a FIFA subsidiary worth $20 billion and sell more than 20% of the shares to external investors (To view the details from here).
The network explained that the countries of the European Football Union, UEFA, will hold an emergency meeting online this week to discuss their opposition to the aforementioned FIFA idea.
It stated that despite the absence of any official move from FIFA in this regard, UEFA has expressed concerns about the plans mentioned in the media.
It pointed out that FIFA did not present that strategy during its meetings with football federations in New York, on the eve of the World Cup final match last week.
According to the network as well, there is a desire among European countries to wave a final threat represented by boycotting the World Cup if Infantino does not back down from his position.
