The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has decided to implement VAR technology in the CAF Champions League starting from the group stage.
The group stage matches for both the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup will kick off on November 27 and 26, respectively.
Al-Botola Moroccan website learned from its official sources at the Confederation of African Football that the planned decision to apply Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology for the first time during the group stages of both the Champions League and Confederation Cup competitions will currently be limited to the Champions League tournament due to the high financial costs associated with implementing this project.
A responsible source stated in exclusive remarks to "Al-Botola" that the project's implementation has entered its final phases before being approved by the end of November, including stadium approvals, provision of equipment and technologies, and reliance on certain European companies to supply technical and administrative staff specializing in video technology.
He added that the high financial cost led CAF officials to request temporary implementation in the Champions League while postponing the file's execution in the Confederation Cup tournament.
According to what "Al-Botola" has learned, CAF officials have not yet determined whether to fully implement the technology with complete VAR equipment or to use the lower-cost version as seen in African youth, junior, and women's football tournaments, in order to overcome difficulties related to transportation, customs, and movement between African countries, especially those that do not utilize video technology.
It is worth noting that Zamalek and Pyramids represent Egypt in the CAF Champions League, while Al-Ahly and ZED compete in the Confederation Cup.
