Carlos Cordeiro, advisor to Gianni Infantino, president of the International Federation of Association Football "FIFA", announced his resignation from his position.
Cordeiro revealed in a statement he issued today his objection to FIFA's proposal to establish an independent commercial company to manage its commercial rights and major events before investors from the private sector
Cordeiro worked as a senior advisor at FIFA for 5 years.
BBC quoted Cordeiro's statement: "I categorically oppose the plans and do not accept the suggestion that FIFA needs external investors to unlock greater value".
He added in his statement: "This proposal has become a crucial question for the future of FIFA.. FIFA's responsibility is not to maximize commercial returns at any cost. Rather, it is to protect and promote football for future generations."
He continued in his statement: "When these principles conflict, football must be the priority."
Cordeiro said he had no role in this proposal: "The most worrying thing is the absence of answers to the fundamental questions. Why this deal? And why now? What oversight is in place? And who benefits?"
He continued: "These questions remain largely unanswered, yet member associations are being asked to make a decision with grave consequences within just 50 days or risk falling behind."
He concluded: "This is not a responsible way to determine the future of the global game."
The European Union had previously announced a boycott by its national teams of FIFA competitions "as long as these proposals remain in place". (See details)
