Whenever you look at African football, a sense of bewilderment takes hold. It is not the confusion associated with choosing between what your eyes see and other options, nor between what you prefer and what you do not. Rather, I mean the bewilderment caused by difficult circumstances and challenges that always shape the breakthrough of stars.
The story here is not just about an emerging player, but a young man facing a promise that might be bigger than himself, holding fast to a word he gave himself, and a decision to develop quietly without looking at the hype. He believed in his abilities, so football decided to grant him the deserved start with his club and his national team in his first appearance.
Today we have a golden boy; we have Ange Martial Tia.
Chapter One | Upbringing and Formation
On November 20, 2006, the little golden boy Ange Martial Tia was born in Bamako, the capital of Mali, a country that has become one of the leading exporters of talent to Europe, supplying European leagues with exceptional players thanks to its specialized academies and the passion for the game that dominates many of its people.
Seriousness, regularity, and determination are the most prominent traits shaping players in Mali. Tia was formed at Afrique Football Élite academy, founded by former player Doumança Camara. It is one of the most important training academies within Mali, whose players are constantly monitored by scouts from Europe, as is the case with many clubs and academies.
The player joined it in 2023 and completed a year and a half there, learning more discipline and commitment, in addition to honing and developing his distinctive talent.
At the beginning of his time at the academy, he was called up to the Mali squad for the 2023 FIFA U-17 World Cup held in Indonesia. He was one of the key elements in his national team's lineup, contributing with a goal and an assist in six matches to reach the semi-finals. From then on, the eyes of European club scouts began to follow him.
Chapter Two | Keeping Promises and the Start of the European Journey with French Club Reims
At an early stage of his career, he displayed greater discipline and good professional character. The French club Reims was the first to monitor and communicate with the player, his entourage, and his club regarding a transfer once he turned 18, following the U-17 World Cup. Despite contact from several clubs such as Marseille and Anderlecht, the player, out of loyalty to his pledge, honored his word with Reims and moved to them in February 2025.
The player arrived in France coming from his small academy, aspiring to a better future through calm but continuous development.
The player started initially with the reserve team, training with his new teammates, and gradually adapted to the situation and atmosphere in France. However, the testing period did not last long, as he quickly proved himself. On March 9, 2025, he got his first opportunity with the first team against Auxerre at Stade Auguste Delaune, coming on as a substitute, but his first start was against Nice on May 2, 2025, in Ligue 1.
His first official goal came in the relegation playoff to Ligue 2, scored against Metz. At that time, Reims were relegated on aggregate, but Tia had fully expressed himself and was not overly distressed because he would play the following season in Ligue 2.
A full season in Ligue 2 had the most significant impact on Tia, participating in 31 matches, starting 20 of them, scoring five goals, and providing one assist. After some time into the season, specifically on November 4, 2025, Reims extended his contract until 2030. His coach, Karel Geraerts, commented after the renewal saying: "I only have positive things to say about Martial. He is very consistent, and he showed that in recent weeks in his preferred position, as a midfielder. He is a golden boy, and he shows that age is not always the most important factor."
To focus completely on improving his football level and developing calmly and thoughtfully, Tia made a decision reflecting his maturity and seriousness: he chose to live in the accommodation at the Raymond Kopa Sports Center (Centre de Vie Raymond Kopa), which is the same center where the first team trains.
Chapter Three | A Promising Player with Great Potential.. The Pitch Through Tia's Eyes
A versatile player is always a rare commodity in African teams generally. When you see or find a player like this, you must believe he will go further than you think.
From creating chances centrally to doing the same from the flank, great versatility is mastered by the same player. I don't see him wanting to go head-to-head with defenders and dribble past them repeatedly; he wants productivity, benefit, and chance creation every time. That is the most important thing, the essence of the game, so the players most diligent and skilled in providing assists are considered among the most important.
Dear reader, you always hear about the term 'attacking space'. Mastering this is not limited to physically attacking a player by running with the ball, passing, and moving towards space for a specific tactical purpose or to create a specific qualitative advantage. Attacking space with a precise pass is tactically more powerful than anything else, hence the importance of intelligent players in attacking via precise passing is equal to that of top scorers, even slightly more.
Our golden boy needs more physical strength, as well as the ability to finish more decisively, making shooting one of the advanced options rather than the last resort.
Chapter Four | Joining the Senior National Team and a Great Start
Coach Anthony Silva, among several new faces, called up Ange Martial Tia, the Reims player, especially after he won the Player of the Month award with Reims last August.
As per his habits, Tia did not need much time to prove his abilities and strong personality, and he did not let down his coach who trusted him to start in his first international match against Cape Verde on September 25, 2026, in Bamako—the city that witnessed his beginnings and now witnesses the start of his international brilliance. Tia scored his first international goal in the fifth minute of the match, contributing to the Eagles' three-one victory.
Just four days later, on September 29, 2026, the player played his second match against Liberia at Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex in Monrovia. As per his initial habits, he also scored the winning goal in the 79th minute, allowing the Eagles to return with a precious away win thanks to their golden boy taking his first steps.
From Bamako, where the journey began a few years ago, Ange Martial Tia was a boy dreaming of the future. Today, he stands on the pitch hearing the fans chant his name, having contributed to Mali securing their first six points in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, with two goals in his first two international matches. That disciplined boy, who learned early that patience and loyalty build glory, did not betray the trust placed in him.
If his start with Stade de Reims and the Mali national team carried all the features of an exceptional launch, what awaits him in the coming years remains open to all possibilities, provided he maintains the lesson he learned early: that a word, when spoken sincerely, builds an entire career.
And until now, Tia has not only kept his promise to his French club, but I believe he has also fulfilled a promise to an entire nation.
