Al-Ahli Club, the Asian champion in the last two editions, is targeting strengthening its midfield before the closure of the summer transfer window, according to Saudi media reports.
According to journalist Mohammed Al-Bukairi, Al-Ahli's company has opened negotiations with officials of South Africa's Mamelodi Sundowns to purchase the contract of player Teboho Mokoena.
Al-Bukairi added in a post on his official "X" platform account today, Saturday, that the objective of signing the South African international is to replace Ivorian international Franck Kessié, who has officially returned to Atalanta's squad.
Kessié departed from Al-Ahli after his contract as an Ivorian international expired, making strengthening the midfield this summer the priority within the "Castle of Cups," especially as the team competes for multiple titles this season.
Mokoena is considered a key element both for his club Mamelodi Sundowns and the South African national team, having previously been a subject of specific interest in the Egyptian Premier League, particularly by Al-Ahli.
The 29-year-old Mokoena holds a contract with his South African club until 2029, with his market value estimated at approximately three million euros, according to the global website "Transfermarkt."
The South African international has played two matches in the 2026-27 season so far, scoring two goals: one in the league and another in the cup.
Overall, the South African international has participated in 182 matches across all competitions, scoring 21 goals and providing 14 assists.
