German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, Bayern Munich captain, revealed for the first time the closest date to ending his football career, confirming that the next season may be the last for him on the pitches.
According to the German newspaper Bild, Neuer, who is 40 years old, spoke about his future during Bayern Munich's camp in Rottach-Egern, after the start of the team's preparations for the new season.
Neuer's statements
When asked whether he would decide his future by the end of the season, as he did in previous years, or retire in the summer of 2027, Neuer replied: "I don't play matches thinking that they are the last for me, but all indications confirm that I will retire."
The German goalkeeper explained that he was very close to ending his career before extending his contract with Bayern Munich last May, adding: "In 85% of cases I would have retired, but I still enjoy playing with this group and the technical staff, and we always have a chance to compete for all titles."
He added: "I do this for myself, because I am still able to help the team, and I have the support of my family and friends."
Neuer dreams of winning the Champions League
The report indicated that Neuer, who is in his 21st season in the German league, hopes to end his career in the best possible way, by leading Bayern Munich to win the UEFA Champions League title in the final of the 2027 edition.
The 2027 UEFA Champions League final is scheduled to be held at the "Metropolitano" stadium in Madrid, so that Neuer can win his third title in the tournament after the 2013 and 2020 editions.
