AFCON Qualifiers – The curse continues since 2023: Ghana suffer a four-goal defeat against Gambia

Via FilGoal

Ghana continued its poor results in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, suffering a painful home defeat against Gambia with a score of 4-2 in Matchday 2.

The match was held at Accra Stadium and saw Ghana take a 2-0 lead, but the visitors overturned the result by scoring four consecutive goals, handing Ghana their second straight defeat.

Ghana has not achieved any victory in its last 8 matches in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, having lost three times and drawn three in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers, which resulted in failure to qualify for the previous edition, in addition to two losses in the current qualifiers.

The Black Stars' last win in the qualifiers came in September 2023 against Central African Republic during the 2023 edition qualifiers, which were played in January 2024 in Côte d'Ivoire.

Carlos Queiroz's squad sits at the bottom of the group standings without points after two defeats, trailing Somalia on goal difference as they prepare to face Côte d'Ivoire.

Meanwhile, Gambia tops the standings with 6 points, three points ahead of the Elephants.

Match Summary

The Black Stars took a two-goal lead within five minutes.

The first came from a penalty in the 27th minute scored by Ernest Nuamah, while Felix Afena-Gyan added the second goal in the 33rd minute.

Omar Colley equalized for Gambia before the end of the first half in the 42nd minute.

In the second half, Ibrama Colley turned the match around in the 68th minute by scoring the third goal.

With a header, Ibrama sealed the game with a fourth goal in the 90+1st minute, securing all three points for Gambia.
