Argentine star Lionel Messi announced moments ago his retirement from international football with his national team, marking the end of his thrilling journey with the Argentine squad.

Messi made his retirement announcement via his official social media accounts, addressing his followers and writing: "After all this time since the World Cup final, and after deep reflection, I would like to announce to everyone my retirement from playing for the Argentine national team."

He added: "It was a painful decision, and it still hurts me, but I realize it is the right time. I swear I always gave my utmost, not only in the past few years when we won everything, but before that as well."

He emphasized: "I have always fought and done everything in my power for the Argentine jersey, to make you happy through football and to make you proud of being Argentine."

He affirmed: "There isn't much time left; chapters come to an end, and this chapter pains me deeply. I loved, and will always love, being part of the Argentine national team. I have given everything I have, and I have nothing more to offer. Moreover, there are wonderful young players coming after me who deserve to be there."

He continued: "Thank you all for all the love and support throughout these twenty years. I will greatly miss hearing you all from inside the stadium. Now, I will be one of you, cheering and supporting you from the stands in victory and defeat, and even more."

He went on: "Thanks to my family for always being by my side and accompanying me on this beautiful yet difficult journey. Thanks to every coach, teammate, and administrator whom I was honored to share this experience with. I will cherish unforgettable memories and moments."

He concluded his message saying: "I leave feeling peace of mind and pride because I gave you, along with my teammates, magical moments. It has been wonderful to live all this with you. I love you all! Thanks to God for making me Argentine. Let's go, Argentina!"

Messi won the World Cup with Argentina in Qatar 2022 against France, but lost the title in the 2026 final in the United States against Spain.
