Jeremy Doku, Manchester City's star, revealed his struggles while playing for the Belgian national team in the 2026 World Cup, noting that how he was utilized, especially during the match against Egypt, affected his performance.
According to what the French newspaper Foot Mercato reported from Doku's statements to Play Sports, the player suffered from a respiratory infection at the beginning of the tournament, which caused him to miss some matches before returning to participate in later stages.
Doku spoke specifically about the match against Egypt, explaining that he was not at his best due to the injury, in addition to being deployed in positions he does not prefer to play in.
Doku said: "When I watch the Egypt match, or many other matches, I wasn't always in the best condition. Besides this injury, I sometimes played on the right wing, or even as a striker against Egypt; I don't think those choices were the best."
The Manchester City player added: "I wasn't in the best condition, especially since everyone knows I excel playing on the left wing. Let's not make excuses; all of that bothered me at times and didn't help me either."
Despite criticizing how he was used, Doku emphasized that Belgium's journey in the tournament was successful, saying: "But in the end, we reached the World Cup quarter-finals, and that is a success for the team."
