Al Ahly Club announced on Friday evening that all agreements with its counterpart Barcelona have been finalized regarding the holding of a friendly match between them next August.
This step comes within the framework of Al Ahly Football Company's efforts to enhance the club's global presence and open new horizons for cooperation with the largest clubs and sports institutions in Europe.
And Barcelona revealed in an official statement the match against Al Ahly in the 61st edition of the Joan Gamper Cup, on Wednesday, August 19, at exactly nine o'clock in the evening Cairo time at "Camp Nou" stadium.
This will be Barcelona's first match at its stadium in the 2026/27 season, coinciding with the team's official presentation to the fans, as the Joan Gamper Cup match returns to "Camp Nou" after its reopening.
Al Ahly will become the first Egyptian and African team to play a Joan Gamper Cup match against Spanish Barcelona.
What is the Joan Gamper Cup tournament?
The friendly Joan Gamper Cup tournament, organized by Barcelona Club every year, consists of a single match in honor of the club's founder, Joan Gamper, and also represents the official opening of the new season in front of the Catalan team's fans.
The Joan Gamper Cup tournament is played in August, before the start of the Spanish League competitions, and features the presentation of the new players and technical staff to the fans at Barcelona's stadium.
The Joan Gamper Cup tournament began for the first time in 1966 at the initiative of Enric Llaudet, then president of Barcelona, and has seen 60 editions so far.
Barcelona holds the record after winning the title 47 times, while German side Köln won the tournament twice, in addition to wins by Monaco, Sampdoria, Manchester City, Juventus, Valencia, Tenerife, Mechelen, Porto, Internacional, Borussia Mönchengladbach, and Újpest, once each.
